Biography

I am an Associate Professor at the City University of Hong Kong's Department of Public and International Affairs. I teach social entrepreneurship, statistics, leadership, and finance at undergraduate and masters’ levels. I also taught courses on entrepreneurship, strategy, marketing, and international business at the bachelor, master (including MBA and EMBA) and PhD levels in the Netherlands, UK, and Hong Kong. I was a finalist of UGC Teaching Award in 2017 and won numerous teaching awards.

I am a management scholar where in the past 15 years I have conducted research on entrepreneurship, innovation, and strategy. I first examined fast-growth ventures in international markets and later I studied hybrid organizations that generate economic and social-environmental outcomes including social ventures, sustainable ventures, Certified BCorporation, and impact investing (affectionately called “social/sustainable entrepreneurship”). In recent years, I have developed strong interests in and investigated the entrepreneurial process and management of emerging technology including artificial intelligence, robots, metaverse, blockchain, tokens, and decentralized organizations, and their implications to economy and society. I am developing the so-called robotic (computational) entrepreneurship with a focus on automating entrepreneurial and strategic processes using programmable robots and chatbots.

I often transcend disciplinary boundaries in how I do research. I embrace multiple research methods, from interviews, surveys and structural equation modeling, discrete choice experiments/conjoint analysis, scenario-based experiments, to computational social sciences (e.g., topic modeling and image as data) and visual methods. I am championing the so-called “immersive research methods” where management scholarship entails taking part in shaping the reality (instead of merely understanding, observing and explaining it). In doing so, I create artistic and technological artefacts (e.g., virtual objects, tokens, sound beats, visuals, comics) as research outputs where the tradition has been to publish "[text-based] papers."

My research has been published in leading business journals including the Financial Times (FT) 50 journals such as Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Venturing (single authored), Journal of International Business Studies (single authored); and Journal of Business Venturing Insights (single authored), Journal of World Business, as well as policy journals such as Policy & Internet, Public Administration Review, Public Management Review, World Development, and Journal of Social Policy.

Some of my research has won international accolades and prestigious awards such as the Best Paper Award at the Academy of Management 2022 Entrepreneurship Division, Kooiman Best Paper Award 2021, International Social Innovation Research Conference (ISIRC) Award, and Emerald Literati 2010 Award. I published the world’s first comics (graphic novels) in entrepreneurship and the first official book on social entrepreneurship on China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. I won more than HK$4 Million in research grants in total (circa HK$2 Million as Principal Investigator).

I was ranked in the Top 2% of all scholars in the Business and Economics category, out of a database of 100,000 scientists, in an author-citation study by Stanford University in 2021.

I am an Associate Editor for Journal of Business Venturing Insights, a premier journal in entrepreneurship. I also serve as Associate Editors for other journals including Business Ethics, Environment and Responsibility, Journal of Social Entrepreneurship, Social Enterprise Journal. I also speak regularly in various local, regional, and international forums. I am the convener of the Academic Forum for Hong Kong Social Enterprise Summit since 2018.

Before rejoining CityU in 2022, I held tenured appointments as associate professor PolyU (Hong Kong) and the CityU (joint appointment between the department of management and department of public policy), as well as assistant professor in University of Leeds (UK) and University of Amsterdam (NL) business schools. I completed my PhD in Entrepreneurship and Master of Commerce (Marketing) at The University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia; and was trained as an accountant in my first degree. Prior to and in between my academic life, I worked as Assistant Vice President Decision Analytics at HSBC Hong Kong, and as analyst at Ruder Finn Asia (Singapore), strategic planner at Lowe Lintas (Jakarta) and auditor at Ernst & Young (Jakarta).
