Abstract

The Erya Shuwen (《爾雅述聞》) of the Jingyi Shuwen (《經義述聞》) was written by Wang Yinzhi (王引之, AD 1766–1834) of the Qing dynasty. The Erya Shuwen has been regarded as one of the greatest works that explains the meanings of the characters and words in the Erya. In this work, Wang Yinzhi had inherited ideas from his father Wang Niansun (王念孫, AD 1744–1832). This may explain why many scholars think that Wang Niansun is the co-author of Jingyi Shuwen. The Erya Shuwen consists of 218 interpretations of the articles in the Erya. They are grouped into three chapters. Wang had used a substantial number of texts to prove the meanings of the articles. The Erya Shuwen is a very important work in Chinese linguistics studies. Numerous re-interpretations of ancient Chinese books, such as the Five Classics (五經) and great works from the pre-Qin and pre-Han periods, were informed by the Erya Shuwen. The work is therefore undoubtedly one of the most informative resources. Many scholars had followed Wang’s footsteps and employed the same methodology in their works. It seems that no new interpretation has appeared since the Qing dynasty. The present study analyzes the Erya Shuwen’s contributions to Chinese philology and attempts to offer alternative interpretations to those give in the text. This study also attempts to provide different interpretations of the characters. I will first discuss the Erya Shuwen’s contributions to Chinese philology in the first part of this study. In the second part, I will discuss how the Erya Shuwen contributes to the interpretation of the Erya. Lastly I will attempt to offer a re-interpretation of the Erya Shuwen. It is anticipated that the findings of the present study will have implications for the study of Wang’s academic achievements and re-interpretations of the Five Classics and other Chinese classics. It is hoped that the results of this study will help to inform new interpretations of the characters and words in the Erya.
