Abstract
The use of circular and elliptical shapes to design circuitries is widely employed in microwave communication systems. A circular structure has only one parameter, which is the radius. Therefore, the designer has only one degree of freedom for the circuit design. If the designer wants to add another design of freedom, then another circuit part needs to be added prior to the circular structure. Meanwhile, an elliptical shape has one more design of freedom. It has two parameters: the major radius and the minor radius. However, microwave circuits aim at satisfying a number of design criteria in the same design, so the addition of more degrees of freedom will be more useful for the multi-objective microwave circuit design.
This thesis examines an advanced circular shape, namely, the Multiple Circular Sectors (MCS) structure, which involves the combination of multiple circular sectors with different radii to form the whole circular shape. The MCS structure consists of many parameters for increasing the design of freedom in microwave circuit designs. In this thesis, the MCS structure is applied in the design of various kinds of microwave circuitries, which includes antenna designs, coupler designs, phase shifter designs, and filter designs. These designs are fabricated and optimized to test their performance. They are also compared with other microwave circuit designs and with existing design techniques. The MCS designs are found to have several advantages in terms of performance over other design techniques.
