Work-integration Social Enterprises in the Disability Sector: Practices, Typologies and Beneficiary Preferences

Abstract

In these three essays, I investigated the practices and roles of work-integration social enterprises (WISEs) in the disability sector. In the first essay, I conducted an inductive qualitative study and developed a novel process model on how WISEs are supporting disabled people through an emancipatory process. In the second, I further explored different exercises among WISEs by conducting a quantitative survey. In the final essay, I adopted a beneficiary’s perspective and investigated what job attributes are valued by disabled people. The essays contribute to the theories of emancipation and social entrepreneurship literature by pointing out that WISEs are not a homogenous group and offer practical implications for developing more effective strategies in supporting people with disabilities.
