Research on High-Gain Filtering Antennas for 5G-and-Beyond Applications

Student thesis: Doctoral Thesis

Abstract

This thesis presents a range of high-gain filtering antennas targeted for 5G-and-beyond applications. It is well known that filter and antenna are two critical components in modern communications systems. In contrast, the filtering antenna is a new component integrating both the functions of the filter and antenna. Traditionally, filters and antennas are designed separately and connected by a simple transmission line or complicated matching network. However, such a design suffers from bulky system volume and dramatically degrades the overall system performance as the filter and connecting structure would introduce significant insertion loss. By contrast, the integrated filtering antenna owns a higher power efficiency and occupies a smaller space than the traditional filter-antenna complex. Meanwhile, high-gain antennas are always required in a wide range of current or emerging application scenarios. These include base stations, wireless backhaul/access communications, radar detecting/imaging systems, space communications, etc. Therefore, it can be anticipated that research on high-gain filtering antennas will be on an upward trend and must be promising in the future. In light of that, five sets of high-gain filtering antennas with unique architectures have been investigated and presented in this thesis. They concern the transparent filtering antenna, corporate-fed filtering antenna array, Fabry-Pérot cavity (FPC) filtering antenna, dual-linear-polarized filtering transmitarray antenna, and dual-circular-polarized filtering lens antenna. These proposed filtering antennas feature a high power efficiency, outstanding filtering characteristic, and a high gain, demonstrating significant potential in 5G-and-beyond communications systems.
