Abstract
In the past decade, increasingly generated digital data is pushing forward the advancement of cloud storage and computation systems. However, existing systems do not consider protecting data confidentiality by nature. Therefore, more and more data breaches hinder the adoption of cloud computing, especially when data owners such as hospitals and banks have proprietary and sensitive data. Note that simple encryption will prevent data utilization like search over the encrypted data. Therefore, the benefits of commercial clouds would diminish. This thesis presents algorithms and implementation for private and versatile search for very large encrypted datasets, ensuring strong protection on data privacy while addressing the big data challenges characterized by high volume, high variety and high velocity. First, we proposed a searchable encryption scheme for secure and e cient similarity search over encrypted semantically rich data with various forms, and we apply this building block to enable privacy-preserving content-aware social discovery services for millions of users. Second, we introduced a new framework that supports fast data acquisition and indexing with strong privacy assurance, which is particularly suitable for cloud-based applications that collect and generate data at high rates. Third, we designed an encrypted, distributed, and searchable key-value data store, preserving the benefits of modern backbones of cloud systems, i.e., high throughput, low latency, incremental scalability, and fine availability. It also securely supports multi-data models and encrypted search via secondary attributes of data. The line of research has impacts to both academy and industry. The resulting solutions introduce new algorithms, new data structures, and new architectures on cryptography and security systems dealing with very large scale of datasets, which bring the entire society confidence of migrating sensitive data applications to cloud computing.
