In order to provide seamless communication that can provide uninterrupted and high-speed communication for both visual and audio data, the integration of mobile telecom network and Internet IP network is a feasible solution. To deal with the seamless wireless communication demands from mobile end users, a novel integrated wireless platform in which I involve, the AnyServer platform, is introduced in the thesis which will serve as a pioneer platform on the seamless wireless communication area. The objective of the AnyServer platfor1m is to provide any kind of services to any kind of client devices anytime anywhere. In this thesis, the overall architecture of the AnyServer platform is presented and a preliminary prototype system is shown as well. Both the mobile clients and server modules in the prototype are also introduced in the thesis. In addition, a Generic Communication Model is proposed in the AnyServer platform to implement the different network transmission protocols requirements that are requested by heterogeneous mobile clients. For handling the large traffic volume of the AnyServer platform in the future particularly through wireless network, an efficient wireless network management mechanism inevitably becomes a critical issue in the AnyServer platform. Network management is defined as “a process of controlling a complex data network so as to maximize its efficiency and productivity” [1]. Inherently in the wireless network, its frequent wireless link failures, high network latencies and low transmission bandwidth characteristics have caused some challenges to the wireless network management task. Therefore in this thesis, I also focus on the network management issues of wireless network under the AnyServer platform by adopting the novel mobile agent technology and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) [2] to deal with the unique features of wireless network. Thus an evaluation is performed in a real wireless network environment to test the applicability under real situation. To further improve the efficiency of management data delivery in wireless network, in this thesis, I extend the studies to the integration of reliable application-layer multicast protocol and mobile agent under the wireless network environment as well. With such novel integration approach, the collected network information can be delivered in an efficient and consistent manner to those management nodes.
