Efficient method of analyzing right-angle wire antennas using the method of moments

Abstract

An efficient method of analyzing right-angle shaped wire antennas using the method of moments (MoM) is presented in this dissertation. The input impedance of any right-angle shaped wire antennas is found rigorously. The result can be applied to large classes of wire antennas and, with a slight modification, slot antennas. Some closed-form solutions are derived for the impedance matrix. These closed-form solutions allow analytical computations, with no singularity nor convergence problems. All MoM impedance integrals are evaluated using these solutions. Compact formulas are given to reduce the complexity of the analytical solutions. The formulas are expressed in terms of Exponential integrals, which can be calculated using engineering formulas. To demonstrate the theory, the L-shaped, T-shaped and F-shaped wire antennas are investigated and discussed in this dissertation. The input impedance, return loss, resonant frequency and radiation patterns are addressed. Since these kinds of wire antennas are often used to feed the patch antennas for wideband applications, the study is practical for designs of both patch antennas and wire antennas. The theory is substantiated by experiment and by using commercial software, and good results are obtained.
