Development of critical success factors and assessment system for coopetition management

Abstract

There is an evolving strategic management concept entitled “Coopetition” in which organizations both compete and cooperate with each other. This trend becomes a major challenge for a lot of organizations. Organizations would like to cooperate with each other and benefit from new knowledge developed by other people or organizations. Cooperation may not be only with the partner, alliance, mother company etc, this can also be with the competitors. It is important for the organizations to mange and encourage themselves to learn and cooperate with their competitors. Although some researches have highlighted the importance of coordination between organizations in effective coopetition, there is little systematic evidence on the use of coordination mechanisms to facilitate knowledge sharing and cooperation between organizations and their competitors. Although a number of authors have recently emphasized the increasing importance of coopetition for today’s business, scientific investigation on the issue of coopetition has not gone much farther beyond naming, claiming or evoking it. This research aims to develop the critical success factors and assessment system for coopetition management. To achieve the aims, the critical success factors of coopetition management are identified through an extensive literature review. A category of the identified factors is developed. A questionnaire survey is conducted to understand the current situation of coopetition in Hong Kong manufacturing industry. Based on the developed model, the relative importance to each identified success factor is determined via expert interview with the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology. With the determined importance weightings a Coopetition Management Assessment framework is developed. Finally a prototype of Coopetition Management Assessment System is constructed.
