    Abstract

Screening new industrial product ideas in the early stages of a new product development (NPD) process is a critical process. Although making a good new product choice is vital, managers have not applied systematic screening models because the models of them have not been customized to reflect the particular character of their company and industry. A customized systematic procedure is proposed to manage the task of selecting potential new products for the electronic component distribution industry (ECDI) in the early stages of the NPD process. In this thesis, screening criteria have been reviewed and optimized by project leaders and managers closest to the new product selection decision in industry. A new screening model has been established and used in an electronic component distributor to predict the success or failure of new product projects, these predictions have been compared to the actual results of real projects. According to the comparison results, the new system can serve as a decision support system for the selection of new products for the ECDI and it also provides insights for further improvement on the new product screening process.
