Abstract

Chen Zilong (1608-1647) was an important poet in the late Ming Dynasty. Yunjian Ci Pai (A literary group of ci poerty at Yunjian, now Shanghai) which was headed by Chen, not only took a leading role in the poetic field of late Ming, but also had a significant influence during the early Qing period. In the past, scholars conducted their research on Chen’s ci poetry mainly based on Chen Zilong Shiji (An anthology of Chen Zilong’s ci poetry) published in 1983. However, the collection in this anthology was incomplete and without indicating the time sequence. These greatly hindered the result of the research. Nevertheless, an unseen anthology named Yunjian San Zi Xin Shi He Gao, Youlan Cao, Changhe Shiyu (An anthology of Chen and his friends’ shi and ci poetry) was published in 2000 which includes the missing ci poetry of Chen and other valuable information that helps to enhance an in-depth study of Chen’s works. This research, with the use of the said new find, aims at focusing on aspects which other scholars have been neglected or overlooked such as: Why did Chen write a great number of ci poetry about spring? What are the differences between Chen’s literary theory on ci and those by other literati of Ming? Whether Chen could realize his poetic theory of ci in his own works? What are the features of Chen’s application of rhymes, repeated syllables and parallel structures in his works? By means of detailed examination, statistical analysis and relative comparison, it is hoped that this research can comprehensively and objectively make a conclusion of Chen’s status and contribution in the history of ci poetry. The thesis is composed of four main parts with nine chapters. The first part delineates some background information such as Chen’s family and life, as well as the versions of his ci poetry. The second part discusses Chen’s poetic theory of ci. The third part is an in-depth study of Chen’s ci poetry which includes its theme and content, as well as the use of imagery, metaphors, allegories, parallel structures, repeated syllables, rhymes, etc. The fourth part is the discussion on the impact and value of Chen’s ci poetry and makes a conclusion of the thesis.
