Student thesis: Doctoral Thesis

Abstract

Photovoltaic industry is an emerging energy industry. The development of the photovoltaic industry plays an important role in easing China's energy dependence and improving environmental quality. Studying development of the photovoltaic industry has important theoretic and practical value.

The photovoltaic industry has a high threshold to enter for enterprises, and it is a capital-intensive, technology-intensive industry. There are a large number of small and medium-sized enterprises and a few core enterprises who have key resources for enterprise’s development, such as patents, capital, capabilities to access clients, highly efficient management system. The industry market structure is evolving to oligopoly. The core enterprise cannot fulfill the requirement of market solely, who need a large number of partners to fully utilize its resource to realize the market value. Similarly, there are a large number of small and medium-sized enterprises with few resources want to access core enterprise to make a win-win deal to promote their own development.

How core enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises can cooperate to create market value, and which factors and mechanism among them have not been systematically studied. Given the context of economy PV industry faced, we see ecology formed by large-scale core enterprises and SMEs as a whole, and argue there are three major factors, which of core level, supply chain finance and supply chain collaboration, and analyze mechanism among them. We explore the causal relations from core levels, supply chain finance and supply chain collaboration to performance of enterprises. Finally, we explore whether the relations are robust in the context of moderation of market competition.

We find that in context of increased market competition, supply chain finance and supply chain collaboration can significantly mediator the resource such as technology, market share et al. to improve the market performance and financial performance of the enterprise. We find that supply chain finance and supply chain networks are mediator to resources of core enterprise in supply chain network. For companies with few resources, supply chain collaboration and supply chain finance can play an active role to deliver key resources to those who lack of resources to improve their financial and market performance of enterprises. At the same time, we found that with moderation of market competition the results are robust.
