Abstract
This paper draws on a systemic functional theory of language to investigate the relationship between language form and rhetorical function in special purpose written texts. It looks, in particular, at one area of English for specific purposes which is generally described in the literature as Research English, that is, the writing up and publication of the results of experimental research in English. This paper aims to demonstrate that, while it is possible to make statements concerning the meanings that are made in the texts and the stages through which they move in order to achieve their goal, it is a matter of much great complexity to draw conclusions regarding the actual language of the texts. The results of this study have implications for register and genre theory as well as for the teaching of English for specific purposes. © 1993.
