Abstract
This paper presents an overview of historical and contemporary Muslim contexts, in relation to issues of women's empowerment and rights. It explores the contradictions between the compulsory familism imposed by extremist interpretations of Islam and the individuality required as a pre-condition for women's right to have rights.
