Abstract

Wideband and widebeam quadrifilar helical antenna (QHA) is proposed for mobile satellite communication systems. It can be implemented either on a satellite as a transmitting antenna or in a mobile terminal as a receiving antenna. Its characteristics such as circular polarization, cardioids-shaped radiation pattern with high front-to-back ratio and wide beamwidth make it widely used in satellite communication systems as Globe Positioning System (GPS), Compass Navigation Satellite System (CNSS) and others. In this paper, a QHA with external feeding network is investigated and discussed. Then a compact 1:4 power divider feeding network is designed for exciting the QHA to achieve wideband performance. The proposed antenna operates at frequencies of 1.615 GHz and 2.492 GHz, which can be assembled for CNSS applications. The measured results show good agreement with simulation. The antenna has impedance bandwidths of 39% and 28% for its L- and S- bands correspondingly, with high isolation between two bands. It also achieves a 3 dB axial ratio beam of 1800.
