Abstract
Prior research has found that media coverage substantively modifies behaviors of politically connected firms. However, how corporate political connections affect media coverage has not been clarified. Based on the differentiation between two types of political ties in the context of China, ascribed and achieved, we theorize that executives with ascribed political connections are more likely to induce traditional media coverage. In contrast, executives with achieved political connections attract more social media coverage. We also find that the relationship between political connections and media coverage is strengthened when the firm and the news agency are same-region located. However, the two main effects above are intensified and mitigated by CEO ages respectively. Our research sheds light on the firm-media relations through detailed investigations into corporate political connections.
