Abstract
It is shown that wall effects may significantly alter heat flow through heterogeneous material. These effects can be accurately modelled using the concept of the apparent wall heat transfer coefficient αw. A method for exact evaluation of αw is proposed and is used for testing of the ad hoc formulae available in literature. The formula proposed by Kubie (1987) gives the smallest errors and is recommended for use in simplified heat transfer calculations. © 1994.
