Abstract

Despite the beneficial effects of alliances in facilitating survival, growth and performance of entrepreneurial startups, it is in general difficult for entrepreneurial startups to form alliances due to their poor resource endowments and lack of established social networks. Research to date has largely ignored the roles played by venture capital (VC) firms in entrepreneurial startups' alliance formation. Drawing on the network theory and the social contagion perspective, our study intends to fill this cap in the alliance literature and the entrepreneurship literature by exploring the influence of VC interlocks on alliance formation of VC-backed entrepreneurial startups. We also test the cross-level moderating effects of tie strength and TMT size. In this longitudinal multi-level study, we used a sample of 2145 firm-year observations (745 entrepreneurial startups funded by 69 VC firms over 5 years) to test the hypotheses, and the empirical results provide support to our proposition
