Upgrading of peat to gas/liquid fuels in supercritical water with catalysts

Research output: Chapters, Conference Papers, Creative and Literary Works › RGC 32 - Refereed conference paper (with host publication) › peer-review

Abstract

The feasibility of upgrading peat biomass to gas/liquid fuels of higher energy densities by supercritical water treatment has been examined in this study. The peat was effectively converted, at a conversion of 70-94%, to gas, liquid and solid products by supercritical water treatment at 380-440C without and with catalysts. The presence of 0.1M of either Ca(OH)2 or FeSO4 significantly enhanced the yields of both heavy oil and gaseous products. The SCW treatment of the peat with 1.0M Ca(OH)2 as catalyst, yet significantly decreasing the gas yield, produced a H2/CH4/CO-rich gaseous product of a HHV as high as 27.7 MJ/kg.
