Abstract

Nanophosphors consisting of lanthanide ions demonstrate unique upconverting traits to transfer low-energy excitation to higher energy emission. Particularly, the development of nanostructural engineering promotes the realization of extraordinary luminescence processes through precise control of dopants’ interactions inside single nanoparticles. Upconversion nanophosphors (UCNPs) are also amenable to integration with other functional nanostructures for exploring synergistic effects. In this chapter, we introduce the basic properties of lanthanide-doped UCNPs and summarize a collection of photonic applications enabled by their outstanding optical properties.
