Unveiling Women's Rights in Asia: Advancements and Uphill Battles

Research output: Chapters, Conference Papers, Creative and Literary WorksRGC 12 - Chapter in an edited book (Author)peer-review

Abstract

This chapter addresses the urgent issue of gender-based violence (GBV) in Asia, including in conflict-affected regions. It highlights the rise in human rights violations against women and the structural inequalities that perpetuate their marginalization. We call for stronger regional human rights mechanisms to combat these injustices. Key barriers to gender equality include patriarchal norms, harmful cultural practices, and inadequate legal protections. The chapter evaluates the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the weaponization of GBV in conflict. The lack of a supranational human rights authority in Asia complicates the promotion of universal women's rights, emphasizing the need to dismantle entrenched obstacles. Future research will delve into these themes, expanding on additional regions and challenges. Part I (Fozia Nazir Lone) assesses regional initiatives for women's rights, while Part II (Anthony Carty) outlines an analytical framework for future studies. We advocate for transformative legal and policy reforms to achieve gender justice in Asia. © 2025 Informa UK Limited
