Abstract
This article reviews Kwan Kai Man's discussion on whether alleged cases of near death experience can give support to the existence of soul. Kwan's discussion strikes a balance between scientific explanations of near death experience and traditional religious views on the soul. The existence of soul has been a philosophical problem in ancient Greek philosophy. However, Socrates's attempt to prove the existence of soul in the Phaedo clearly shows that a purely philosophical approach is inadequate. The existence of soul is a cross-disciplinary problem and it calls for cross-disciplinary investigation. Kwan's discussion is a good example of how philosophical thinking and methodology can contribute to this cross-disciplinary investigation into the existence of soul.
