Abstract

Modern Standard Chinese (MSC) has been adopted as the national standard by both the PRC government (Putonghua) and Taiwan government (Guoyu) and has been advocated extensively. However, due to the separation of the two sides across the Straits, different standardization approaches adopted by the scholars, and the lack of effective communication of the people due to historical, political, economic, cultural, geographical as well as other social reasons, the pronunciation standards adopted by mainland China and Taiwan are doomed to be different inevitably. After studying the differences in terms of the phonetic system and examining some existing Chinese learning software with transcription aids, this paper talks about possible reasons that have contributed to such variations. Finally, from a sociolinguistic point of view, a discussion on how to handle the learning and handling of such variations in the short term as well as the standardization principles and directions in the long term is provided.
