Abstract
Discover the Heritage of Waglan Island Lighthouse in Hong Kong
First lit on 9th May 1893, the Waglan Island Lighthouse is one of 34 lighthouses built by David Marr Henderson (韓德善), the Engineer-in-Chief of the Marine Department of the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs Service, who served China for 29 years. As an icon of modern international maritime transport, it symbolizes the blending of the civilization of East and West. Waglan Island Lighthouse, one of the five lighthouses declared monuments in Hong Kong. From the stories of Charles Beatty Allenby Haig Thirlwell (花維路) and the fisherman community, who was the lighthouse keeper of Waglan Island Lighthouse for 20 years, it can be seen that how the lonely lighthouse keeper propagated the beliefs of love and mutual help, how he helped the local fishermen integrate into that colonial Hong Kong society, how he eliminated the possibility of social conflicts, on his own. The aims of this project are exploring archival documents of East and West so as to fill the gap of Hong Kong lighthouses history before World War II; and merging historical lighthouse and new media through original discovery by student researchers across disciplines.
To celebrate International Museum Day Hong Kong 2021 and to showcase the university’s commitment to social responsibility, Hong Kong Maritime Museum collaborated with Department of Media and Communication, Department of Linguistics and Translation and Run Run Shaw Library of City University of Hong Kong to provide advanced multimedia tools so that students could conduct research and interviews. The high definition 4K standard has been used to make the video. Along with other photos it will be used for future education and research, helping to spread a comprehensive understanding of the lighthouse technicality and its value to humanity. This project is funded by Maritime and Aviation Training Fund (MATF), Transport and Housing Bureau, HKSAR.
