Abstract

Adopting Stimulus-Organism-Response theory, this study investigated how Covid-19 misinformation exposure influenced people’s behavior of performing social distancing. Based on a survey in mainland China and Hong Kong, it is found that Covid-19 misinformation exposure significantly influenced public’s adoption of keeping social distance. Moreover, emotion- mediating process and cognition-mediating process were identified to mediate the relationship between misinformation exposure and keeping social distance. This study further clarified the relative strength of the two information processing mechanisms.
