Abstract
Based on a discussion of Hans-Georg Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics, this essay argues for both the historicity of understanding and the relative certainty of understanding, thus the critical function of hermeneutics in arguing against misunderstandings and distortions. It gives as examples some of the misconceptions of China and Chinese culture in cross-cultural studies, and propose a corrective of such cultural dichotomies.
