N2 - The purpose of this Note is to propose a two-dimensional nonlinear shell model analogous to a model proposed by W.T. Koiter in 1966, but where the exact change of curvature tensor is replaced by a modified tensor, the form of which is suggested by recent works of V. Lods and B. Miara and of A. Roquefort. An interest of this tensor, from the computational viewpoint, is that its components are simply polynomials of degree ≤ 3 with respect to the covariant components of the unknown displacement field and to their partial derivatives. It is shown elsewhere, in a joint work with A. Roquefort, that this two-dimensional model can be justified for all kinds of geometries of the middle surface and of boundary conditions. © 2000 Académie des sciences/Éditions scientifiques et médicales Elsevier SAS.
