Abstract

A 10 years' old standardbred mare shows apathy, water and food rejection, staggering and alteration of biochemical haematic profile. The blood smear shows Heinz's Body. That horse received 100 g of dehydrated garlic for 10 days and the diagnosis was garlic intoxication. There are a lot of garlic products on the market, because the use of garlic show much advantages, but it can became toxic in some situation. The toxic effect is probably correlate with allicin, and its sulphured metabolites. These molecules ingested in large quantity or by chronic supply became toxic and produce a characteristic symptomatology. We consider that it is required more study about the use of herbal supplements in the different animal species to avoid intoxication and adverse effects.
