Ultraviolet photolytic-induced changes in optical fibers: the thermal expansion coefficient

Research output: Journal Publications and ReviewsRGC 21 - Publication in refereed journalpeer-review

Abstract

A 15-30% reduction in the thermal expansion coefficient of the germanosilicate core is shown to be responsible for the effect ofUV photolytic processing on the birefringence of elliptical core fibers. An explanation in terms of stress relaxation during the transient adiabatic conditions of photolysis with intense UV laser pulses is proposed.
