Typological characteristics of the consonant sounds of Tibeto-Burman languages in China

Abstract

This paper investigates the typological properties of the consonants of the Tibeto-Burman languages spoken in China (TB languages, henceforth). It aims to discover the cross-linguistic typological generalizations about the consonants and consonant systems of a sufficiently large sample of areally and genetically balanced TB languages. The many varieties of TB languages are spoken mainly in the southwest regions in China, including the provinces of Xizang (or Tibet), Yunnan, Sichuan and Guizhou. The TB languages are generally classified under the seven major groups listed below (Li, et al., 1987).
