Abstract

This study probes nature-based adaptation strategies to address climate-induced flooding risks in Grimsby, UK, a historic fishing town facing economic decline. Acknowledging the town’s historical economic downturn post-Brexit and the ongoing environmental degradation, we propose an innovative dual strategy. By constructing an interconnected lagoon wetland system utilising dredged sediments and advancing multi-trophic aquaculture, we aim to safeguard against storm surges while reviving the local fishing industry sustainably. Our spatial analysis pinpoints optimal locations for wetland restoration and aquaculture sites, promising to bolster biodiversity, protect coastal habitats, and foster economic growth. This research underscores the transformative potential of aligning ecological preservation with economic development to address global climate challenges, offering a replicable model for other coastal communities with ecologically regenerative local industry and an active response to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025
