Abstract
This chapter provides an update on the information provided in the second edition of the Encyclopedia related to unique features of tropical cyclones (TCs) in the western North Pacific (WNP). Specifically, the climatology of TCs in this ocean basin will be expanded to include more years and two sets of best-track data. The interannual to interdecadal variations of the frequency and intensity of TCs making landfall along the East Asian coast will also be presented. In addition, new research results on the physical processes associated with TC genesis under the monsoon shear line pattern as well as the Fujiwhara effect will be described. © 2026 Elsevier Ltd.
