Abstract
Idioms are a kind of culturally loaded language used by a group of people for idiomatic expression of ideas. They have the distinctive feature of having a fixed meaning not deducible from those of the individual words, and reflect the culture of that society at a particular time. On the other hand, proverbs are the phrases or sentences that give advice or reflect some truth. By analyzing the 81 Cantonese idioms and proverbs found in a comic called ”The Great Canton and Hong Kong Proverbs” drawn by a graphic designer and part-time cartoonist Ah To, this paper compares the English translations of two levels: the surface literal level, and the underlying metaphorical level in order to shed light on their pedagogical and research implications.
