    Abstract

Two-dimensional components are normally produced from sheet-stock and involve nesting process. The nested components are subsequently cut following a predetermined tool-path. While the main consideration of nesting is material yield, tool-path generation process aims at reducing the required cutter movement. The direct benefits of minimizing the cutting path are improved productivity and reduction of tool wear in some cases. However, several constraints may be imposed by the technology to be utilized in the cutting process. Hence, optimization of tool-path is not necessarily aimed at reducing the path distance but would also try to eliminate the constraints to be met. In this paper, strategies that may be used for obtaining optimal or near-optimal tool-paths have been presented. These strategies can be classified into different levels and the user would be able to select a combination of algorithms that best suit the manufacturing situation involved. The approach has the capability of rapidly generating near-optimal solutions using a combination of heuristic and genetic algorithms along with some fine-tuning techniques.
