Abstract

Methane hydrate is considered to be a potential energy resource. It is significant to research on mechanical behavior of methane hydrate. This paper proposes a method to model methane hydrates as agglomerates of spheres cemented together by Parallel Bond Model (PBM) in the Distinct Element Method (DEM).A proper set of model parameters for the agglomerates is required for a realistic simulation of Methane Hydrate (MH).The relationships between the bond strength parameters and the macroscopic parameters are found by conducting TC simulations with different micro bond strength parameters. Macro-mechanical behaviors of MHare simulated by selecting the appropriate micro parameters based on the established relationship. The DEM results are examined from microscopic scale, i.e., residual bond ratio, evolution of fabric and vector magnitude. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Group.
