Abstract

Investigations of the optical nonlinearity, by Degenerate Forward Four-wave Mixing at 1.064 μm, in the soluble conjugated polymer poly(3-butylthiophene) are reported. Transient grating response times are limited by the laser pulse width of 70 ps. Measurement of the diffraction efficiency as a function of polymer concentration reveals contributions from both real and imaginary terms. Intensity dependences for concentrations in the range 0.1 - 1.0 g l-1 are found to be characteristics of an eight-photon mixing process, indicating a three-photon resonance enhancement of the nonlinearity. Values of the seventh-order microscopic susceptibilities are calculated. © 1989.
