Abstract

This chapter has introduced adaptive protective clothing under cold weather. The chapter has a comprehensive introduction about the design requirements for cold weather clothing firstly. There are several kinds of smart fabrics and textiles which can be used to protect people from cold weather, including breathable fabrics, far-infrared fabrics, and other intelligent textiles. Shape-memory polymers can be used as adaptive textiles under cold conditions as well. Phase-change materials (PCMs), substances with a high latency, are introduced and reviewed in this chapter subsequently. Some novel fabric systems used currently are also discussed. Finally, the future of smart clothing for cold weather conditions will be consolidated by the integration of new materials and new technologies. © 2009 Woodhead Publishing Limited All rights reserved.
