The Use of Assessment Rubrics and Feedback Forms in Learning

In 2012 the Education system in Hong Kong will change from the current system of four years of junior secondary, three years of senior secondary and three years of university to a 3-3-4 system. As a part of this change of the system university courses and syllabus’ throughout all of Hong Kong need to be redesigned. One university in Hong Kong has expanded upon this change and also redesigned all assessment criteria in order to make them more accessible to the students. It is thought that this will aid them in their learning. Not only were new assessments set, but new grading rubrics as well as assessment feedback forms were also developed to help students improve their overall writing. The combination of learner centered assessment rubrics, feedback forms and exemplar scripts has shifted the role of assessment in these courses from one of testing only to assessment for learning. Samples of our materials, student and teacher impressions of the approach, and preliminary results will be presented.
