Abstract
Grammatical gender has become a popular topic of investigation in many neurolinguistic studies. This chapter aims to give an overview of electrophysiological and neuroimaging studies, both on gender comprehension and production. The discussion of experimental data focusses mainly on Germanic and Romance languages, as they have been well researched experimentally with respect to the phenomenon of grammatical gender. However, some reference is made to some under-researched languages. The chapter mostly discusses processing in the native language but occasionally also refers to second language processing. Take-home messages include the time-course and neural substrates of grammatical gender processing in the brain during language production and comprehension.
