Abstract
The effect of improving a component on the increase of system reliability is studied. The order of the increases due to improvement on different components is a natural measure of component importance. For different improvement actions, the rankings of importance may differ considerably. First some general results are given for the k-out-of-n system. Then the effect of parallel redundancy is studied in some detail. An example is given in the Appendix which illustrates the ideas. © 1989.
