The impact of Building control on urban planning and building management in Hong Kong

    Abstract

    Hong Kong had developed from a fishing village to an international city well-known for its skyscrapers over a period of about 200 years. The building control is implemented through a policymaking mechanism by legislation institution during this time. The building control mechanism of the architectural market is constantly reviewed and frequently amended to meet the changing needs of time. Consequently, there is always controversy about the building ordinance. This article attempts to study the impact of building control on the evolution of urban planning and building management in Hong Kong with historical research method. It takes the background of high-density urban development mode, and sums up the influences of building control on the evolution of urban form by analyzing commercial and private housing cases. It also tries to sum up the historical experiences and explore the scientific method of building control in Hong Kong.
