The grammar of Chinese multimodal text: investigating Chinese-emoji concurrence in computer-mediated communication

Abstract

This study investigates the interaction of linguistic text and pictorial emoji as an intersection of multimodality, grammar, and pragmatics in Chinese computer-mediated communication (CMC). In recent years, with the established networks of Chinese CMC such as mini-blog, emoji has been widely incorporated into Chinese social platforms and has been gaining ever-growing recognition (Zhao et al., 2012; Liu et al., 2015). However emoji is not adequately studied in terms of its concurrence with Chinese and culturally dependent usage (see Park et al., 2013; Dresner & Herring, 2014; Moschini, 2016).
