Abstract

The formation of ε-Fe3-2N phase in a nc pure Fe sample was investigated. The nc Fe sample was prepared by means of the surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) technique. Formation of εFe3-2N phase in the nc α-Fe was observed when the nitrogen potential was below the critical value for the coarse-grained Fe. The results show that the enhanced nitriding kinetics of nc α-Fe in the SMAT sample can be attributed to the much increased heterogeneous nucleation rate at numerous grain boundaries in the nanocrystalline α-Fe.
