Abstract
This paper analyses the factors for urban residents’ engagement in underground “Mark Six” (UMS), a popular type of illegal lottery activities in mainland China. Given UMS’ detrimental effects on participants and the ineffectiveness of official control measures, this article investigates the mechanisms of informal social control on engagement in UMS by integrating Institutional Anomie Theory and Social Disorganization Theory. To explore the effects of a series of theoretically relevant factors, the study conducted hierarchical linear regression analyses by incorporating the data at both community-level and individual-level collected from Liuzhou in southern China. The results in this study could not only extend the explicability of the two theories to the Chinese context, but also shed light on how to design effective countermeasures against urban resident’s engagement in UMS.
