Abstract
This paper focuses on the interactions between emoji and text in the comments on the Mercedes car quality story reported by People’s Daily on Weibo. The visual-verbal appraisal analysis, drawing on the concepts of coupling and bonding, intends to examine the evaluative patterning across language and emoji in the combination of meaning making. The findings show that emoji play an important role in activating appraisal or ironic and friendly meanings from the interplay with their language partner in a comment. Different stances are generated through the visual-verbal synergy in a concordant or discordant mode. In addition, some emoji function as interpersonal signifiers more than meaning carriers depending on specific contexts. The co-construction of appraisal meanings in a comment cannot be complete and accurate without considering the role and function of emoji in the emoji-text relationship.
