    Abstract

Software engineering and information systems are both very young as academic and professional disciplines. These two disciplines are somewhat intertwined in that a major component of any information system is its software. While software engineering may be relatively more established and a fair degree of consensus now exists as regards the scope and nature of this discipline, there is still a large degree of divergence in terms of education and research in the field of information systems. This paper attempts to take a cursory look at some aspects of current practice in information systems research and education in the USA, UK, and Hong Kong, with a view to gaining insights into the nature and scope of the subject and the role of software engineering within it.
