Abstract

Polymeric materials, in either natural or synthetic form, have been widely used in our daily life and they exist in various form in our buildings. Owing to their carbon based nature, most of them are extremely volunerable in development of fire. It has been a great concern in the fire safety and engineering professional community to alleviate fire hazards due to polymeric materials. This paper aims to give an overview of the current researches and new trends in fire retardant materials development. The flame retardancy study of the Polymer-layered silicate nanocomposites (PLSN) and the synthesis, thermal behavior as well as the combustion characteristics of some reatctive flame retardant for polymeric materials are presented and discussed.
