Abstract
The Fisher Island (Yuwengdao) Lighthouse also named "Pescadors Lighthouse" and "Xiyu Lighthouse", situated in Xiyu Township, Penghu County. Built in 1875 in place of a demolished pagoda lighthouse built in 1778. The original pagoda lighthouse marked the haven of Magong on the shipping route between Taiwan, Fukien and Amoy that was in use by over 300 years ago. As the earliest lighthouse in Taiwan and the only lighthouse still using traditional clockwork to rotate the light. Yuwengdao Lighthouse has significant research value. The experience of preserving and protecting the valuable lighthouse can be widely shared, so as to better protect other lighthouse monuments.
In order to gain a comprehensive understanding of Yuwengdao Lighthouse monument to enhance its preservation, a production team of 19th Century Multicultural Maritime Customs Lights Service Documentary led by Steve CHING, has been set up by the City University of Kong Hong. In October 2016, with the support of the Run Run Shaw Library and the Department of Media and Communication of City University of Hong Kong, the team made a field trip to Yuwengdao lighthouse heritage. By using advanced multimedia devices and digital media equipment, traditional hand wound clockwork mechanism is unveiled. The video also unveils precious legacy photo of the pagoda lighthouse taken by Royal Geographic Society and the tragic story of Bokhara shipwreck. Research on Yuwengdao Lighthouse is one of the initiatives of the Preservation and Appraising Traditional Cultural Heritage project of the City University of Hong Kong, and the first step in the project is to arouse people's awareness of the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
