The clinical efficacy of Cyclospasmol®: A review of the literature

Research output: Journal Publications and ReviewsRGC 21 - Publication in refereed journalpeer-review

Abstract

A review of the clinical literature of Cyclospasmol (cyclandelate) published during the past 30 years is presented. This review demonstrates that Cyclospasmol has a therapeutic effect in elderly patients suffering from cerebrovascular dementia, in that it slows the rate of the dementing process. The drug is also demonstrated to shorten the recovery time of symptoms arising from stroke or closed head injury. In peripheral vascular disease Cyclospasmol is demonstrated to have a therapeutic effect in conditions including intermittent claudication, angiopathy, retinopathy, Ménière's and related symptoms, and it is also demonstrated that the drug is of value in the treatment of symptoms arising from the vascular effects of diabetes. In both cerebral and peripheral indications the review highlights the importance of adequate dosage levels and durations of treatment. On the basis of this review it is concluded that the therapeutic effect of Cyclospasmol appears to be due to an increase in the efficiency of the circulatory system.
