Abstract

Since the economic reform in 1978, China has experienced a remarkable speed of economic growth and an extraordinary process of urbanization. The urbanization rate has increased from 20% to 45% in the last 30 years. Meanwhile, the economic development gap between regions, especially western inner cities vs. eastern coastal areas and urban vs. rural areas has become widening, which has induced a large number of migrant workers to move to coastal cities and urban areas. This paper intends to provide a clear definition of temporary migrant workers, and categorizes their characteristics. The purpose is to give a critical review of temporary migrant workers in China with the objective to provide recommendations for appropriate housing provision to this specific target group of people. © 2009 Faculty of Construction and Land Use, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
